Firesafe and precision control usually come from two different valves
You have flammable or sour media that needs throttling, and the plant fire spec demands API 607 certification. Most catalogs make you pick between a certified firesafe isolation valve that throttles poorly and a characterized control valve with no fire certificate. One vee-port actually body handles both jobs. The AVCO 1900 is the example we reach for, and the engineering below is why.
What "firesafe" means on a ball valve
API 607 is the fire-test standard for quarter-turn valves and other valves equipped with nonmetallic seats. It measures a valve's ability to seal before, during, and after direct fire exposure. The typical test engulfs the valve in a roughly 1,400–1,800°F flame for 30 minutes, and compliance is based on specified limits for external and through-seat leakage during and after the test, plus required post-fire operability.
That certificate is the proof that matters. "Fire resistant" on a datasheet with no test behind it will get flagged at permit review, and it should. You'll also see ISO 10497 and API 6FA cited on spec sheets, so confirm which standard your project documents call out before you order. We also recommend obtaining the manufacturer’s fire-test certificate and confirming that the exact valve configuration falls within its qualified design range.

How the valve seals after its seats burn away
In normal service, the PTFE seats do all the sealing. A fire destroys them. Line pressure then shoves the floating ball onto a machined metal lip behind the downstream seat, and that metal-to-metal secondary seal limits internal leakage for the rest of the event. The stem needs the same protection, which is where graphite packing comes in. Graphite keeps sealing above 700°C, long after conventional packing has burned away and opened a leak path to atmosphere. The vee port: control duty from a quarter-turn ball
A full-port ball passes most of its Cv early in its travel. That leaves a narrow, twitchy control band where a few degrees of rotation swings flow hard — fine for on/off, useless for throttling. A vee-notch ball spreads that flow across the full 90° of travel. The notch opens as a growing triangle, so Cv climbs in a near-equal-percentage curve instead of dumping open at the start. That's the same characteristic you'd expect from a globe-style control valve, delivered from a quarter-turn body that also carries the API 607 certificate.

Actuation makes or breaks the control job
A characterized ball is only as good as the actuator turning it. For modulating service, you want a positioner that reads the 90° travel accurately and holds position against packing friction, especially the graphite packing that protects the stem in a fire. Undersized actuation gives you hunting and dead band, and that erases the control resolution the vee port bought you. Pick the actuator for the seated torque plus a safety margin, not the running torque.
