Selecting the Right Valve Material for Chemical Service
The wrong material doesn't just fail — it corrodes, contaminates your process, and creates safety hazards. Here's how to get it right the first time.
Body Material
The valve body bears full system pressure in direct contact with your chemical. 316 SS handles dilute acids. Alloy 20 is the standard for sulfuric acid. Hastelloy C-276 is required for HCl and mixed-acid service.
Seat & Seal Material
Seals fail first in chemical attack. PTFE resists nearly everything. FKM (Viton) is best for fuels and hydrocarbons. EPDM is the go-to for water, steam, and caustics. Never use FKM in ammonia or caustic service.
Stem & Trim
The stem sees both chemical exposure and mechanical stress. 316 SS is standard. Upgrade to Monel or 17-4PH for chloride environments where stress corrosion cracking is a real risk.
End Connections
Threaded connections create crevice corrosion traps in chloride service. Flanged with PTFE gaskets is preferred for corrosive media. Tri-clamp is standard for food, pharma, and sanitary applications.
