The Apollo 76-500 vs. JFlow SRDM3833 vs. Bonomi 2200 SRL

The Apollo 76-500, J-Flow Controls SRDM3833, and the Bonomi 2200 SRL have numerous attributes in common.  The main feature these valves have in common is a spring return handle (also known as a deadman handle).

The deadman handle operates on the same principle as the original deadman's switch after which it is named.  Put simply, the handle will return to a closed position by virtue of a spring if the human operator fails to do so. Providing vigilance control, a spring return handle is excellent for preventing spills, unnecessary loss of product, incorrect mixtures, and other mishaps.  Each manufacturer has produced a similar product.  Picking the right one might come down to the details.

    Apollo 76-500

The Apollo 76-500 series is available in sizes 1/4" to 2", and this stainless steel ball valve features full port, FNPT threaded connections along with a stainless steel deadman handle. This series can handle pressures between 2000 psig for 1/4"–1" and 1500 psig for 1-1/4"–2". The seat material and stem packing are Multifill PTFE, while the stem bearing is RPTFE and the stem itself is blow-out proof, A276-316 stainless steel.  The ball is also made from A276-316 stainless steel, and it employs a PTFE body seal for sizes 1-1/4"–2" only.

    JFlow SRDM3833

2" JFlow SRDM3833 - 2 Piece, Stainless Steel, Ball Valve, with Spring Return (Deadman) Handle

The JFlow SRDM3833 offers, for roughly the same price as the Apollo model, a 2-piece design with a stainless steel ball valve and locking (optional) deadman handle. These valves are engineered for heavy-duty, long-term operation. The JFlow model may feature the best handle of all three. And the design makes the handle easy to replace if necessary. These valves are rated for 1,000 psi, include a blow-out proof stem, and provide FNPT threaded connections. These JFlow ball valves are available in sizes 1/4" to 2".

    Bonomi 2200 SRL

2" Bonomi 2200 SRL - Two Way, Stainless Steel, Ball Valve with Deadman Handle

The Bonomi 2200 SRL series is the least expensive of the three. This is a 316 stainless steel, direct-mount ball valve featuring a spring return handle that can be locked open, if desired.  The spring return handle is adjustable and is made of stainless steel.  Like the other two, this valve features full port threaded connections.  Bonomi also equips their valves with a blow-out proof stem. Note that the stem packing is high-cycle, live-loaded and these valves are engineered for a 1,000 psi working pressure, 1/4"–2".

    Conclusion

Each company offers excellent options for ball valves with a spring return handle.  All three are known for excellence in quality, reliability, and longevity.  All are relatively close in price, as well. The Apollo model is potentially constructed of the highest-quality materials.  The JFlow model may be the most innovative, and the Bonomi model is the epitome of heavy-duty, no-nonsense construction and operation.  Choosing the right one may boil down to cost and/or specific needs.
