The classic design is a float that rises and falls in a tapered glass or plastic tube, so you can watch the flow rate directly. Metal-bodied variable area meters work on the same principle but use a spring-loaded vane instead of a float, which lets them measure opaque fluids, mount horizontally as well as vertically, and do away with a breakable tube. Both give an instantaneous reading with no power supply and very low pressure loss, which suits low flows in laboratories, industrial plant and OEM equipment.
