About Sanitary Pressure Transmitters

A sanitary pressure transmitter does the same job as an industrial one — it converts process pressure into a 4–20 mA, HART or digital signal — but everything on the wetted side is built so the instrument can be cleaned in place and sterilised in place without being removed from the line.

The difference is the process connection. An industrial transmitter uses a threaded port with an internal pressure cavity; product collects in that cavity, it cannot be flushed out by a CIP cycle, and in food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical service that cavity is a contamination risk and an audit finding. A sanitary transmitter replaces it with a flush diaphragm welded directly to a hygienic fitting — most often a tri-clamp (Tri-Clover / ISO 2852) ferrule — so the sensing surface is continuous with the pipe wall.

How to spec a sanitary pressure transmitter

Six decisions determine the part number. Have these ready and a quote takes minutes:

  • Process connection and size. Tri-clamp is the default; 1-1/2" and 2" ferrules cover most process lines. The ferrule size does not have to match the line size — it has to match the tank or tee fitting you are landing on.
  • Pressure range. Gauge, absolute or compound. Tank level applications are often specified in inches of water column rather than psi, because you are reading head pressure, not line pressure.
  • Accuracy. Quoted as a percentage of span. General process control is comfortable at 0.25%; batching, custody and validated pharmaceutical steps usually call for 0.2% or better of adjusted span.
  • Output and protocol. 4–20 mA two-wire is the workhorse. HART adds digital configuration and diagnostics over the same pair, which matters if the transmitter sits inside a validated loop you have to re-range without pulling it.
  • Electrical termination. DIN EN 175301-803 Form A connector, M12, cable gland, or an attached cable. Washdown areas favour a sealed gland or moulded cable over a connector.
  • Temperature. SIP cycles run well above process temperature. Confirm the transmitter is rated for the sterilisation temperature, not just the operating temperature — this is the single most common spec miss.

Where they are used

  • Tank and vessel level — a bottom-mounted flush transmitter reads hydrostatic head and infers level, with no float, probe or moving part inside the vessel.
  • CIP supply and return — proving that the clean-in-place circuit reached and held its target pressure is part of the cleaning record.
  • Pump discharge and filter differential — a rising differential across a filter is the earliest signal that it is loading up.
  • Fillers and dosing skids — fill accuracy tracks pressure stability upstream of the valve.
  • Brewing, distilling and dairy processing — anywhere the vessel is emptied, cleaned and refilled on a cycle.

Sanitary transmitter or sanitary gauge?

A gauge shows pressure at the valve; a transmitter sends it to a PLC, chart recorder or batch record. If the reading only has to be seen by an operator standing at the skid, a sanitary gauge is cheaper and needs no power. If the reading has to be logged, trended, alarmed or interlocked — or if it forms part of a batch record you have to produce for an auditor — you need a transmitter. Many skids carry both, so there is a local indication that does not depend on the control system being up.
